What Do I Do with it?

Make your own mixes

Not only does an Oak Barrel impart flavors on your drinks, it makes a great way to mix them.
Make a negroni, some fireball (cinnamon whiskey) or a dozen other drinks.

Make whiskey from scratch

If you have access to high quality drinking grade alcohol you can use your barrel to make whiskey or many other drinks from scratch. If not, there are many kits available to help with this.

How do I get started?

2. Fill with water to cure

Fill your barrel up with lukewarm water through the top cork hole and seal it. Allow it to sit in a sink, on a baking pan, or in a bathtub if its a big barrel (5L or larger).
Let it sit for 1-2 days until there are no leaks. If it leaks, fill again with water and repeat while the wood swells.

3. Check and rinse

Now that the water has made the wood expand go ahead and empty out the water through the top cork hole again. Fill it with water and rinse out any particles in there. Repeat a couple times until no flakes come out (there will be some specks of char which is completely normal.)

4. Fill with your drink

With the barrel all cleaned out,
your ready to pour your favorite drink in there. Make sure to fill it at least 85% full to prevent the top wood from drying and causing leaks.

5. Monitor

Keep an eye on your barrel over the next few hours and days to make sure no leaks develop. If they are going to happen, this would most likely be the time. If it does, pour your alcohol out, refill with water and repeat the process for an additional 1-2 days.

6. Sample & Wait

Sample your drink every week to make sure it is getting the expected flavors and doesn’t get to much of that ‘oak-iness’. The smaller the barrel the more inside surface area and the quicker the alcohol will take on it’s flavors. Most drinks will take between 2-6 weeks to achieve the ideal flavor profile.

*Note for wine lovers*

Many of us love a good quality wine however wine requires a bit extra attention when putting in an oak barrel. This is because wine has carbonation and gives off gasses -the slight pop when opening-which causes the barrel to want to explode. Our barrels air air tight which mean it needs to go somewhere and that is out between the wooden staves(slats) and the head(end piece). This applies to both home made wine and store bought brands like Costco’s. Needless to say, its not a good thing and requires an extra step or two.

Giving as a gift?

Keep it wrapped it

For best results, keep your barrel wrapped up in plastic wrap or sealed in its box and not exposed to the air. This is because oak dries out like any other wood and when your barrel does not contain liquid, it will slowly begin to dry. So even though it might look pretty, keep it sealed until your ready.

Can I use it with different alcohols

Yes, you can switch between alcohols. There might be some residual flavors from the prior contents. To eliminate this, go ahead and rinse your barrel out thoroughly and let it sit with water for 1-2 days and empty it out. This should pull out many of those prior alcohol flavors. You can also use something called a Campden tablet which is similar to giving your barrel a baking soda scrub on the inside, but without leaving that flavor.
